There are a bunch of companies making Windows Mixed Reality headsets, though I’ve heard very little about whether they are actually good. HP, Acer, Samsung, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, etc. The Acer one is currently on sale for $200 with controllers, which is pretty nice deal if it works well:  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/collections/vrandmixedrealityheadsets

OK, you convinced me. These have gotten cheap enough that I’m willing to mess with one. Obviously the new Vive has some significantly nicer features, but it’s going to be a long time before that gets this cheap. Obviously $120 is nicer than $200, but probably worth the premium vs. trying to find some random used unit. I do sort of wonder if the fact the MS has this, as well as the Dell and Lenovo units (though those are sold out) on sale means they are giving up, but as long as it works with SteamVR there should be fun to be had. Hopefully it doesn’t suck!

They work great with SteamVR. Only issue I’ve found is that the hand controls are tracked via the cameras on the front of the helmet so if your hands go too far to either side and the camera loses sight of them things get a bit weird.

That’s good to hear. The reviews I looked at seemed indicate that the VR experience was not as good as the Vive Pro (and of course everyone raves about the Vive’s optional wireless), but seem to say this is more comfortable and easier to set up, and massively cheaper than the whole Vive setup. The biggest complaint seemed to be that Windows Mixed Reality can be used on machines that are way to feeble to actually hit the framerates needed at a resolution that looks good. On high-end hardware, it sounds like it is roughly on-par (with some pluses and minuses) compared to the Occulus and original Vive. Having not tried those, I may not notice even if it is worse, it probably doesn’t need to do much to out-pace the Samsung GearVR.

I do think the field of view is a little cropped compared to the Vive. It’s FAR more comfortable though. Like, no comparison whatsoever.
